Richard: This is Richard Jacobs from Speakeasy Marketing. Today I am here with Lynda Goldman, a marketer and copyrighter for the Natural Health industry. Lynda, please tell me more about yourself.
Lynda: I provide marketing and copyrighting to people in the natural health profession because that is my passion. However, I worked in many industries in the past. I’ve been a speaker. I’ve written 31 books in various areas.
LinkedIn is something that has become a passion for me in the last year because it has completely revolutionized my business. That is what I want to talk about today. To summarize: I have been a speaker and an author, and I write and do marketing.
Richard: Today we are going to talk about how you literally, you said, built your business using LinkedIn. I think this is really interesting. I didn’t know you could do such a thing with LinkedIn. First of all, how is LinkedIn different from other social networks?
Lynda: LinkedIn is the professional network. Facebook is for friends. Yes, there are Facebook business pages. If you have a product, it is better for products that are direct to the consumer. Twitter has benefits. Personally, I’ve been on Twitter & Facebook for a year and haven’t gotten much benefit from either social network.
HOWEVER, with LinkedIn… I landed 25+ clients in the last year – good clients, too. I estimate 90% of my clients in the last year have been from LinkedIn.
Richard: That’s amazing.
Lynda: It is amazing. I didn’t even believe in LinkedIn before that. It took a few months. It didn’t happen immediately. Once I figured out a system of how to work with LinkedIn and I started seeing results, then I started doing more. Of course, the more you do, the better your results.
Richard: I use LinkedIn. All the attorneys I work with use LinkedIn. I go in and I add people to my network. Every once in a while I answer someone’s question. What is it that you do differently that gets you business?
Lynda: LinkedIn is a lead generation tool. It is not a selling tool. You never sell on social media. What you try to do is build relationships, build connections. Then, some of them lead to business.
I want to start with a few statistics I pulled up on LinkedIn just in the last day or two. I don’t know if you know that 145,000 CEO’s are on LinkedIn, including the executives from all the Fortune 500 companies. I think that is kind of interesting.
Richard: I think it is interesting because everyone wants to get to those people. How do you get to them? How do you get through gatekeepers to find them? If they are on LinkedIn that tells me there is another way to get to them; a personal and fast way.
Lynda: Statistics show people open LinkedIn mail. It gets through email, in a different way. Whereas, if you send an email to the president of a company and the person doesn’t know you, chances are he or she would not open your email.
Again, for some reason, people seem to open LinkedIn mail. It seems to get through more easily. That’s interesting.
What is also interesting is how LinkedIn is growing in leaps and bounds, just over the last year or two. There were a lot of people on LinkedIn two years ago, but it seems to be just growing exponentially.
LinkedIn added 50 million new members in the last year. As you can imagine, people you never saw on LinkedIn before now are on LinkedIn. Now you can find all kinds of people that you maybe could not connect with or you did not even know existed. Now you find them there.
Richard: Do you have other statistics?
Lynda: Yes, the statistics are very interesting. There are over 1 million groups on LinkedIn. The groups are very powerful. I am going to talk soon about how to use the groups. That is actually the heart of how to use LinkedIn.
I just wanted to give you those stats because it is just astounding how fast LinkedIn is growing. What that means, of course, is more connections and more possibilities of connecting to the people you want to connect with
