What Really Makes You Appear On The First Page Of Google?

Interviewer: What is the “Google BS story”?

Richard: I don’t know if you call it an urban legend, or if it is something ingrained in everyone’s brain, unfortunately. Everyone is told: If you can get on the first page of Google for certain keywords, then you will have a great business.

If you’re a DUI lawyer, you want to be number one for “Los Angeles DUI lawyer.” If you’re a divorce lawyer, you want to be number one for “Orlando divorce attorney.” I say this is bullshit, and this is why.

There is my site, www. MyDUIattorney.org. I got it up to a thousand searches a day on Google. I used to be number one for DUI attorney, and DUI lawyer in the whole U.S. I got about eight searches a day from each of those terms when I was number one.

In the DUI world at least, there’s no better term than the shortest, supposedly juiciest terms. Well, I am at 1,000 searches a day. If only a few keywords mattered, then the few keywords would be responsible for all those searches.

Let’s blow this up even bigger. So I am getting about 30,000 searches a month. I took six months’ worth of searches, which is 180,000 searches. You would think if only a few keywords are important, there would be 80 different keywords responsible for those 180,000 searches. But, guess how many different keywords are responsible for all those searches.

Interviewer: How many keywords are responsible for Google searches?

Richard: There were about 179,200 different things people typed in to Google. That told me regular keywords are bullshit. I don’t care who you’re jealous of that’s number one for New York DUI lawyer, or whatever. It doesn’t mean anything. They’re not getting a lot of business from that.

I say this all day long. All the lawyers cry about it. They ask, “Why am I not on this? Why am I not on that page for that?” It does not work. That is not the goal. The goal is to be on the first page of Google for thousands of keywords, tens of thousands.

The only way to do that is through content and through links; not by just hammering a few keywords. That’s an argument I eternally have to make to these guys. They’re always being told a few keywords are important, and they’re not. I have the proof.

Interviewer: Do you appear on the first page of Google from content, rather than keywords?

Richard: Yes, that’s where all this comes from. I’ll take divorce. You’re a divorce attorney and someone needs your help. They’ll rarely put in “Cleveland divorce attorney.” They’re more likely to put in “I’ve been married for 11 years. Will my wife get half my earnings through alimony?” How can you SEO for that? How can I know if I get on page one for that, that I’ll then get a client? You cannot know.

What you can do is talk about every single aspect of divorce you know is possible. You can put up all the common things people ask about. All that content will act as a huge net. It will pull in these individual weird searches that you never can imagine someone would type into Google.

I’ll give you one more example. “I was driving through downtown. Got pulled over by San Francisco PD, and blew a point 1.1. Now what do I do?” People type that into Google. I swear to God. Good luck SEO’s with that.

Yes, I really mean good luck SEO-ing for that. What gets clients is people typing in crazy shit like that. That is why the content works. That is why traditional methods you hear about don’t work. I am here to tell you that.
